The Shot Shot Counts The Most

There are many stories that are told in ways where it just makes us feel good and makes us want to do good. It sets off a message that I think everyone should understand and not be so self-centered or selfish. For all the good in the world, it all starts with one person leading by example, hoping that good deed will rub off onto someone else, creating a frenzy of greatness. This is the story of a Texas basketball team that shook my heart and hopefully yours as you watch the video. Mitchel a highschool team manager with a developmental disability got the chance to fulfill his dream of playing in a live game of basketball. The plan for the team and coach was to play Michel no matter what the score. Win or lose Michel would have his time to shine and score the last game point. With a minute and a half left Mitchel was put in the game to score the last point, as his teammates handed him ball after ball but managed to miss each shot given to him. It was then the courage of one player on the opposite side to pass him the ball. With the final seconds on the clock, Mitchel made the last point of the game. Even tho it wasn’t the game-winning point the final shot made by Michel did change the outcome decided. Play any game with this much sportsmanship both teams win.

With the chills down my spine, the story made me feel great! It a feeling that makes me want to do something great, to make someone else feel even better than the way I feel. With the final pass to Mitchel having one more shot to shine he makes the basket. I believe that in life everyone should have an equal opportunity to shine. Game or no game we all have the opportunity to take a shot in life and I feel that everyone should have the love to let that person shoot because that person may have an idea or pitch that can ultimately lead them down a successful road or an unforgettable moment. In an article read that spoke of properties like elevation and prosocial behavior it explains what its like to feel elevated and what can lead to prosocial behavior. Elevation, a positive moral emotion, ‘that’s triggered by the good deeds of others that motivates  people to do good deeds themselves (Haidt, 2003, p. 276).  As I watched the once again I did fee the obligation and the motivation to do the same if I am ever in the same position to give an equal opportunity to the one who needs it the most. With actions of kindness, love and giving it provided me to reestablish a prosocial behavior towards any of the sports I play (Andrew L. Thomson & Jason T. Siegel, 2017).

I grew up in sunny California in the city of Whittier, I played sports my whole life since the age of 5 starting with football, baseball, soccer, basketball, and track & field along with wth many other intramural sports. Agreeing to stick with track & field which lead me to complete at the college level put me in the position of where I am today. in the summer of 2020, I will be leaving for boot camp to end my Jr. year of college coming back to school to complete my senior year of college before I start my life goals.

  1. It was heartwarming to watch and read about Michel’s opportunity to shine on the basketball court. I agree with you that sports should be more than just win or lose in and of themselves. Playing a sport/game is about cooperation, sportsmanship, and plain old fun!!! You mentioned you would like to incorporate prosocial behavior in any of the sports you do, is there one in particular you prefer to incorporate it in. If so, what steps do you plan on taking?

    1. Yes the Pole Vault is my Numer one sport where I can see myself interacting and making a prosocial behavior out of it. This is also a sport I love ans woud teach anyone in anygiven moment. coaching in a poaitive way each time will help sinse it is not a team effort the vaulter has potential to be better than himselfe and has no potential to be put down by other teammates.
